Other Hotels that are easily accessible
by public transport are:
- Alila Hotel Jakarta (*Recommended)
- Raddin Ancol Hotel Jakarta (*Recommended)
Other tips:
- A twin-share room typically comes with 2 single beds
consisting of 2 mattresses each so if you are happy
being a little less comfortable then you should easily
fit 4 people into a single room by separating the mattresses.
02. Airline
Tickets
The Indonesian international airline
is Garuda Indonesia (http://www.garuda.co.id),
however a huge number of other international airlines
fly in and out of Jakarta.
Online tickets through the official
airlines websites are usually more expensive than organising
them through a travel agent so it is recommended that
you purchase your tickets from another source.
03. Communications
to/in/from Jakarta
(A) Translation
- We can organise translation into English for you when
you arrive here. Just speak to one of the church leaders
and we will be glad to assist you in this area.
(B) SMS/Telephone/Email
- Organising a mobile phone sim card in Indonesia for
using sms messages is easy. You simply bring a SIM compatible
phone (No CDMA’s) and purchase a pre-paid SIM
card in Jakarta. SMS messages are typically around Rp.350
each to anywhere in the world. Telephone calls from
mobile to mobile within Jakarta are also very low cost
relative to western nation prices.
- International calling cards can be bought for calling
back home to anywhere in the world.
- Internet access is not particularly common in Indonesia
because it is still relatively expensive so don’t
expect many opportunities to sit down and read or write
emails.
(C) Snail Mail
- Postcards and other letters can be sent to or from
Jakarta but take an average of 7-15 days to be delivered
depending on the destination.
04. Currency
Exchange
Currency exchange into the Indonesian
Rupiah is best done in Indonesia. It is a good idea
to change a small amount of your local currency into
Rupiah for use at Jakarta airport upon arrival if necessary.
You can change money at Foreign Exchange booths in most
cities.
There are many money changers in Indonesia
that will give you a much better exchange rate than
you will find outside of Indonesia or you can use ATM’s
to withdraw cash (from your linked credit account) when
you arrive in Indonesia at close to the prevailing exchange
rate. For the current exchange rate check http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic.
05. Food and
Eating
Food is very different in Indonesia.
An average Asian style meal costs between Rp.5,000-20,000.
For a western style meal the cost is more like Rp.20,000-50,000.
There are a huge variety of different fruits and vegetables.
Food is available almost anywhere in Jakarta and stores
are open till late every day of the week. Just one piece
of advice … if your stomach is not accustomed
to the water or the general food conditions in Indonesia
then be prepared for a bit of stomach ache. There shouldn’t
be any problems if you are wise choosing the places
where you eat.
06. Malls/Trade
Centres/Markets
There are plenty of malls within 30-minutes
drive of the church - Mega Mal, Taman Anggrek Mal, Golden
Truly department store, Mal Kelapa Gading … The
mall experience is part of what Jakarta is all about.
For a detailed article on Jakarta malls, go to http://www.expat.or.id/info/malls.html.
There are also quite a few trade centres
nearby. Three that are located within 5-minutes of the
church are: ITC (International Trade Centre), WTC (World
Trade Centre) and Mangga Dua Mal which are all interconnected.
The style of shopping that you find in these places
is very different to anything that you can find in Sydney.
Each store is usually around 4m x 4m in size and there
are around 4000 shops in the three adjacent buildings.
You will find some great prices on all clothing, jewellery,
electronics and just about anything else …
The markets can be a whole lot of fun.
You will need to know some of the local language if
you want to try and bargain for the goods. There are
small street markets just about everywhere at the right
time and on the right days.
07. Other Attractions
The church is located in the heart of
the China-town district of Indonesia. The president’s
palace and National Monument are about 10-minutes drive,
the airport is about 30-minutes drive, the city centre
is about 15-minutes drive, the Ancol funpark is about
10-minutes drive … There are so many things to
see within a very small radius around the church building.
For more information check out http://www.indonesia-tourism.com/jakarta/places.html.
08. Passport
Information
Probably the only consideration will
be that your passport must be valid for at least 6-months
after the date of your departure from Indonesia. You
will need to check this with the Indonesian Embassy
in your country.
09. Transport
around Jakarta
The forms of public transport are trains,
buses, bajai’s and taxis, all of which are very
readily available. It is definitely not advisable for
westerners to go out walking on the streets, especially
at dark places/times.
